I started training in 1991 when I raised my first puppy for Guide Dogs of America in California. After raising three of their dogs, I moved out of state so started raising pups for Canine Companions for Independence. I raised four dogs for CCI and taught puppy kindergarten, good manners, and CGC test prep for the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. Currently, I am a puppy raiser for Dogs Inc (formerly Southeastern Guide Dogs).During those three decades, I have stayed current with theories and methods. I will teach you how to train your dog using 100-percent-positive methods, so you and your pup will form a happy, healthy bond while making sure he or she fits nicely into your household.

Training that is informational yet fun! From puppies to adults, the learning curve is long.I believe dogs should love their training and never be fearful of it!If a dog shows fear, then something else is underneath the surface, and it should be explored. I am trauma-informed and use a different set of tools for these dogs. Deep safety and building confidence are key to a better understanding and a better dog.I look forward to working with you and your canine companion.

St. Augustine, FL

CPDT-KA | ABCDT | CBATI | CBCC-KA | Dog Training

Growing up in Connecticut, Christel Fleming joined the United States Air Force. After 14 years of committed service as a Radiologic Technologist, a medical separation prompted a significant career shift. Driven by her lifelong passion for animals and teaching, Christel combined these interests by becoming a dog trainer. In 2012, she graduated from her initial dog training program and established a business offering private in-home lessons. Seeking further expertise, Christel earned her Canine Training and Behavior Specialist certification from Starmark Academy in 2017. Later that year, she relocated to St. Augustine, Florida, to dedicate her skills to training service dogs for K9s for Warriors, a local non-profit. Within just three years, Christel's talent led to her promotion as Manager of K9 Training. She played a vital role in transforming the organization's training methods from the use of aversive tools to relationship-based approaches, collaborating with Precision Behavior to enhance staff expertise and prioritize canine well-being. During her time as Training Manager, Christel spearheaded the development of several key initiatives: a mentorship program for experienced trainers, a K9 Trainer Apprenticeship Program for new staff, a Prison Program providing inmates with valuable skills, a career progression path to improve trainer retention, and standardized training criteria with incremental testing to ensure consistency. Although she valued the opportunity to enact positive change, Christel missed working directly with dogs. In mid-2022, Christel transitioned from her management role to pursue opportunities that allowed for direct animal interaction and the coaching of training professionals. She holds certifications as a CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, CBATI-KA, and FDM.

Stephanie Johnson

Pensacola, FL

CPDT-KA

SJ Dog Training LLC offers private in person dog training and private virtual dog training. Offering puppy training and socialization, basic manners training, cooperative care training, behavior problem solutions, and more! All training plans are fully customized to meet the needs of each individual client and dog. Stephanie has been training animals professionally since 2015. Her training career started with three California sea lions and an African fish eagle at a zoo and aquarium accredited by the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums and the Zoological Association of America. The highlight of her time with the sea lions included being part of the birth, successful hand raising, and training of the first marine mammal ever to be born in the state of Arizona! When she left to move to Florida the sea lion family had grown to five sea lions with a sixth on the way. After moving to Florida, Stephanie spent time caring for and training Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. She then transitioned to training service dogs for veterans with PTSD, TBI, and MST. Being part of a military family herself, Stephanie loved being able to give back and help veterans who have sacrificed so much for us. Stephanie is excited to bring the experience she has gained from training multiple species to guardians and their dogs. Her goal is to help you build a better relationship with your dog by helping you understand behavior and helping you learn how to communicate and train your dog effectively using positive reinforcement. Stephanie takes her professional development and continuing education very seriously. She is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. She has a Bachelor's degree in Biology with an emphasis in Animal Biology. She has completed the Aggression in Dogs Master Course by world renowned aggression expert Michael Shikashio. She is a Professional Level Member of the International Marine Animal Trainers Association. She participates in animal training seminars, lectures, webinars, discussion groups, and conferences, including Karen Pryor Academy’s Clicker Expo, and studies books and other materials from top animal trainers around the world. In her free time, Stephanie enjoys spending time with her husband, son, and two dogs. She also volunteers as a trainer with HART (Humane Alliance of Rescue Trainers).

Jeff Joyce
CPDT-KA

Jeff is certified by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, a member of The Association for Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) and The Pet Professional Guild (PPG). He is the lead behavioral therapy trainer and program manager for the not-for-profit shelter program at A Sound Beginning Program. He helps thousands of dogs and cats every year in shelters across the country. He provides community support with virtual, phone or in-home behavioral consultations in order to help pet parents keep their animals instead of surrendering them to a shelter and he serves as a mentor for new and existing dog trainers in the Florida area. Jeff believes that teaching and training are both a science and an art. Understanding the science behind training is important but the timing and application of it is crucial to the overall process. Everything starts with forming a relationship, then blossoms into understanding and learning for both humans and canines. He follows simple guiding principles and a teaching philosophy based on four pillars of relationship bonding: Mutual Motivation, Mutual Communication, Mutual Trust and Mutual Respect. The experience between the human and canine working and learning together will create, strengthen, and maintain a bond for a lifetime. As a life-long learner, he enjoys reading books on training/canine language/animal behavior/ psychology, plus watching DVDs, taking online classes, and attending seminars on the same subject matter. Real world learning is based on numerous years of volunteering for various shelters, rescues, humane societies, and animal control. Mentoring and collaborating with colleagues is an invaluable resource to his canine training education. Joining the A Sound Beginning Program team reinforces Jeff’s desire to continue learning, sharing, and growing as well as becoming a more significant partner in the complete training process for both ends of the leash!

Amanda brings a unique blend of expertise: her background in leadership and human behavior informs her collaborative, family-centered approach to behavior consulting. She combines this with advanced training in canine behavior modification, grounded in the Humane Hierarchy and informed by ongoing education through leading conferences and workshops. She draws inspiration from Dr. Jim Crosby, Dr. Ian Dunbar, Dr. Amy Cook, Simone Mueller, Dr. Temple Grandin, Suzanne Clothier, and more. Amanda's consulting practice offers in-home assessments, collaborative behavior change programs (Foundation, Enhanced, and Advanced), analyzing behavior videos, and single private sessions. She works collaboratively with clients, dog sitters, and their veterinarians to create personalized behavior modification plans that address the root cause of behavior challenges and patterns. Amanda believes in empowering families to become confident advocates and co-trainers for their dogs, providing options instead of ultimatums and emphasizing trust, patience, and practical solutions that fit real-world family life.

I have ten years experience working with dogs, and their people, suffering from behavioral issues. My areas of specialization are dogs that are fearful or making aggression displays. I will work with these dogs with, and without, a bite history. because so much of aggression in dogs is routed in fear, my goal is to help these dogs develop confidence and recognize that the world is not such a scary place after all. To do this it's critical to help the dog's people learn how to recognize when their dog is becoming uncomfortable and how to diffuse the situation. I work with all dogs using the Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive (LIMA) techniques and work to instill trust in both dog and their people.

With Bark Busters, you work directly with a dog trainer in your own home using a method that takes into account the unique challenges you're facing and then fosters a positive relationship between you and your dog. This method enables you to build a lasting, emotional bond based on trust and respect, which in turn aids in overcoming past challenges with your pet. Bark Busters dog trainers focus heavily on training people, as much or more as training dogs, so that once you learn to communicate effectively with your dog, you will have the necessary tools to be an effective dog trainer and "leader of his/her pack."

Being a curious person by nature, it has become my focus to understand behavior from the dog's point of view. When an owner has a better understanding of why their dog might be biting, fearful of things in the environment , or barking and lunging on leash, it's allows for a conversation that can help the pet parent can gain a better understanding of their dog. Owning a dog with aggressive behavior is very stressful and emotionally draining. I know I can help the dog, but it has become my life's mission to help the owners too.

Hi, I’m Lauren, the trainer behind Canine Confidence Club. My background in animal care and training includes experience as a kennel attendant, groomer, dog walker, dog sitter, and professional dog trainer. Over the years, I’ve worked with dogs of many breeds, ages, and temperaments in both group class and day training environments, helping guardians better understand their dogs and build stronger relationships through clear communication and ethical training practices. I earned my CPDT-KA certification in April 2026 as part of my ongoing commitment to continuing education and professional development. I’m a current member of the Pet Professional Guild, the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, and the Grisha Stewart Academy. I’m also currently pursuing a B.S. in Companion Animal Science through Unity Environmental University. My training philosophy is rooted in force-free, reward-based methods that prioritize both learning and emotional welfare. I do not use aversive tools or punishment-based approaches, and I strongly value training that is ethical, evidence-based, and sustainable for both dogs and their guardians. I’m especially interested in canine behavior, enrichment, learning theory, and the relationship between stress, environment, and behavior. Much of my continuing education focuses on helping dogs gain confidence, develop practical life skills, and navigate the human world with greater clarity and success.

I grew up loving animals and nature my entire life. That love and passion influenced me to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Outdoor Recreation and Resource Management with specialties in Animal Behavior and Underwater Science. While completing my degree I began working with dogs both at my local animal shelter as well as a major pet store chain. I found a deep love for animal behavior and helping owners achieve their goals. After college I pursued my passions in the zoo and aquarium industry and was fortunate to work in multiple countries and states with a wide range of animals. Throughout my career in the zoo field I worked as a private trainer with people’s dogs and was constantly improving by bringing the tips and tricks from the zoo and aquarium field to owners and their pets. After 13 years working with exotic animals professionally I decided to leave the zoo and aquarium field to work with a multi-species rescue as a trainer and adoption coordinator. I eventually moved into a new position as the Behavior and Enrichment Manager for the rescue and developed, then implemented, new programs including K9 Comeback (working with volunteers to behaviorally rehab at risk dogs) and Puppy Preschool (starting puppies with socialization and life skills early). In my time at the rescue I pursued and achieved certification as a Fear Free trainer as well as an Accredited Dog Trainer through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC). Shortly after leaving the rescue I completed my testing and received my Certified Canine Behavior Consultant credentials from IAABC.

I offer private lessons in your home or chosen location (e.g., park, etc.). Trainings typically run for 6 weeks and teach the skills that will help your pet become a polite, happy member of your family. You will receive advice and instruction on how to improve your dog’s life and well-being, as well as helpful direction for dealing with behavioral issues as they arise. We will structure lessons to meet your needs as well as your pet’s. While we can modify lessons to accommodate additional training needs, basic obedience training covers the following: sit, down, stay, come, heel, loose leash walking, wait, leave it and polite greetings. Biography I have been training dogs and horses since I was about 17 years old and currently volunteer with Sunshine Big Dog Rescue. With an educational background in Psychology and Education/Training, I understand how both dogs and people learn best. My goal is to teach people to teach their dogs to behave politely and enhance the relationship between pets and people. My credentials include completion of online training and a hands-on externship through Animal Behavior College (ABCDT and Pet CPR/First-Aid certifications) and an ABC course specializing in Training Shelter Pets. I am a proud member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers and The Pet Professional Guild, and I continue taking seminars (CEUs) on training methods, animal learning, body language and behavior. We provide positive reinforcement training and follow the LIMA (Least Intrusive Minimally Aversive) approach. We never use force, fear, or physical punishment to get a dog to perform a behavior. Our dogs want to please us, and when we make good behavior rewarding for them, they will happily and willingly comply.

I have been active in dogs for over 15 years. I began showing Bearded Collies 35 yrs ago. I have finished several champions and have qualified for Westminister Kennel Club Show. I have also competed in obedience. I currently own 2 maltese, one long haired chihuahua mix and one terrier mix. One of my little maltese enjoys agility and my terrier mix is preparing to compete in obedience. My terrier mix suffers from separation anxiety and even though it is a slow process, I am happy to say that she is much improved. I believe that each dog is an individual and there is no one-size-fits all training. There are basic approaches that are helpful, but the trainer needs to be mindful of each individual triggers and work with both dog and owner to solve these issues.

I believe a solid foundation in the basics can go a long way in helping a dog overcome most obstacles that life will bring. Eleanor McCoy

Fort Lauderdale, FL

Dog Training

Hi, my name is Eleanor McCoy. I am a dog trainer, pet sitter and dog walker in Fort Lauderdale, FL. I started East Paws Pet Services in 2008 and began this pet sitting, dog walking and pet care services journey. At that time I was employed by the School Board of Broward County as a bookkeeper and also worked in fitness clubs as a Certified Group Fitness Instructor. I have been a member in good standing with the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS) since 2008. I feel education is an asset in any industry and have taken advantage of all the resources NAPPS offers. In 2010 Animal Behavior College (partnered with NAPPS) offered a program to become a Certified Dog Trainer. I signed up and excelled in that course and gained the title of Certified Dog Trainer. Still eager to learn all I could with the care of my client’s pets, I became a NAPPS Certified Pet Sitter in 2011, which included the American Red Cross Pet First Aid and CPR. In 2013 while attending the NAPPS Conference I was certified by Pet Tech for CPR, First Aid and Care of pets. This is a hands-on course, which for me is a better way to learn by reading it, seeing it and doing it. To round out my resources for everything pet, I joined Pet Sitters International (PSI) in 2015 and became certifed with them in 2018. I gained the title of CPPS (Certified Professional Pet Sitter). Our pets are dependent on us for all their needs. They say it takes a village to raise a child well, I feel the same way about your pets. I want to be part of your family to help you with the care of your pets when you aren’t there. Also, I would want to help you in the training of your dog and alleviate those problem behaviors.

Dog Training

THE Pet ELF Mission At THE Pet ELF (THEPetELF.com or twitter @dogtrainerELF), our mission is to reduce canine homelessness by teaching people how to communicate with and teach their dogs to live successfully and happily in the human world. Our philosophy is reward the positive and ignore the negative (unless it is a danger to do so). We also encourage our humans to channel their inner cheerleader and effusively praise their dogs for desired behavior. We don’t believe that we have to be the alpha over our dogs. Research has shown that, in domesticated dogs, this is not necessary. We do, however, need to be the adult and set boundaries, as we do with young children. We use positive training and basic psychology, working with a dog’s basic instincts for unconditioned things, like food, toys and praise, to condition a dog to do things that may not be instinctual, like sit and stay. While treats and toys are important to teach new behavior, praise is the most important reward for our dogs. Once a behavior is learned, dogs are weaned off treats or toys and do things we ask because they want to please us. We use hands-off training because we believe that hands are for loving not for teaching. We also don’t believe in punishment. We want our dogs to love us, not fear us. Dogs respond very well to this type of training. This type of training not only keeps our dogs safe; but, helps them become responsible members of the household. Further, we know through experience that not all behavioral issues are training issues and we know when we can help and when we need to call in the experts! THE Pet ELF (THEPetELF.com) is certified as a dog trainer and as a veterinary assistant through Animal Behavior College, with continuing education in training shelter dogs. THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES IN DOG TRAINING. All we can do is our best – to teach our dogs be better household citizens. IF YOU CAN’T MANAGE THE DOG, MANAGE THE ENVIRONMENT. WE ALWAYS WANT TO SET OUR DOGS UP FOR SUCCESS. END EV

Dog Training

Hey there, I’m Kelsey! My website is www.phopaws.net With over 15 years experience in working with people and handling dogs, I have learned that the key to successful dog training is in working with the owners in a way that makes sense to them and where they feel comfortable to take my methods and use them without my presence. I have come to realize that nearly every dog behavior problem can be solved with the proper education and application of balanced reinforcement methods so long as there is unwavering commitment from the dog owners. I am an ABC Certified Dog Trainer and Mentor Trainer, and I specialize in my field in working with aggressive dogs and dogs displaying destructive behaviors to varying degrees, and in training their owners to implement strategies to rehabilitate these behaviors completely. There is also a huge focus on owners of puppies who need the proper structures to avoid behavior problems altogether. Each session is an hour and a half long, after our in person thirty minute consultation. These private training sessions are offered to anyone inquiring about general dog ownership education, basic household structures, raising puppies for success, or dog behavior problems that I believe can be solved with your application of my methods. Some of the most unwanted behaviors found in dogs are aggression, fear, anxiety, possession, unpredictable behaviors, high energy or destructive patterns. Dogs displaying these behaviors have a much higher chance of ending up at a shelter, being passed from home to home, or even causing damage to other dogs, people, households and other animals. Regardless of the behavior issue requiring private sessions, I require all family members who live with the dog to be present at each session. My goal is to help you find the root of the problem and together come up with a training plan to solve the problem. I aim to coach you on handling your dog with an empowered attitude and the least amount of frustration possible. ***P

I believe that dog training is essential to developing a life long human-canine bond. I believe that every dog is capable of learning, regardless of the dog(s) age, or breed. I believe there is no such thing as a dog that is bad, or un-trainable. I encourage and support owners to develop the confidence, patience, and understanding in working with their dogs. I support local rescue, and strive to create opportunities for learning in my community. My mission is to help, struggling dogs, and dog owners before anyone is harmed or feels harmed.
