During my college years, I volunteered in the Washington Park Zoo’s education outreach program. After Reed, I worked at the Oregon Regional Primate Center. I spent two years conducting behavioral research on infant rhesus macaques and was listed as a contributor on several journal articles. After working in research, I started a pet boarding business, the Mutt & Me, B&B and operated this business and fostered dogs for 7 years before moving to Seattle. Atlas fundamentally expands access to assistance dogs. We support people with disabilities to train and certify their own service dog using positive, ethical training methods. At Atlas, we believe anyone who would benefit from a qualified assistance dog should be able to have one. Atlas supports the individual who wants to and is able to be an active part of training their own dog. Our Atlas Team Facilitators are skilled volunteers who assist clients who are working to train their own service dog, either entirely on their own or with a trainer. The facilitators guide the team through their final six or more months of training, working with them to refine the dog’s performance, develop the dog’s skills in mitigating the client’s disability, and prepare the team to pass our public access test and work with confidence in all settings they frequent. The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) also requires trainers to pledge to follow their code of ethics. That means my methods will always take how your dog and you feel about our training heavily into consideration, and I try to make the experience as positive as possible for everyone Two years later, in 2017, I went back again to test for CCPDT’s advanced certification and earned my CBCC-KA (Certified Behavior Consultant – Knowledge Assessed) certification. This requires experience and knowledge specifically in canine behavior consulting (fear, anxiety, and aggression). In 2021 I took the brand new L.E.G.S.® Applied Ethology Family Dog Mediation® Professional Course to further my understanding of Behavior and expand my tool box to better help dogs and their humans. In 2024 I completed the Dynamic Dog Practitioner course. This course gives an in depth education on posture, gait and biomechanics of dogs. I continue to pursue advanced training opportunities, and my certifications require that I earn Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) from approved experts each year. I haven’t always been a positive trainer (I’m what dog people call a ‘cross over trainer’) but today I believe in and am dedicated to following methods that are founded on the idea that dogs are doing the best they can, with the information we give them .My goal is to teach both you and your dog the skills you need to cooperate more effectively in the modern world. That’s why I follow the guidelines outlined by the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), including LIMA: Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive and the Humane Hierarchy of Behavioral Change. In 2007, I worked with Summit Assistance Dogs to become a certified handler of a therapy dog named Sassy to provide further support to students who receive special education services. We discovered dog agility and went on to compete in USDAA, NADAC and ADAC agility. We currently have 5 dogs, all adopted from a shelter or rescue. Hi, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Dick Lester. For the past 15 years, my family and I have lived in the Marysville area. I retired from the U.S. Navy. Dogs and dog training have always been a part of my life, and have always wanted to be a dog trainer. Over time dog training methods have changed a great deal from punishment training to positive reinforcement. Dog training should be fun for both owner and dog. The dog should be obedient because it wants to obey because it is fun and not out of fear and punishment. My goal has been to learn how to teach the correct techniques to the owners, so they can have obedient dogs that are fun to be around. That creates that special bond between dog and owner. In my search for a training technique that enforced my own beliefs. I found that Animal Behavior College not only believed as I did, they had a way to teach those concepts to do trainers and owners.
