I took a leap to full time dog training. I have been in business since that year. Jacob started training dogs in obedience, canine good citizen, and agility at the local kennel club when he was a teenager. As an adult Jacob had a 13 year career in Law Enforcement and Government work, though his love of building a stronger relationship with his dogs never wavered. No longer having the time he did as a teenager, Jacob and his wife sent their beagle/lab puppy to Off Leash K9 for the Board and Train Program. When Comet came home, Jacob rediscovered how rewarding it was to have such good communication between the family and dogs. Shortly after sending Comet to Off Leash K9, he decided to make a career transition and turn his hobby into one of the best jobs you can imagine! He now provides board and train dog training, as well as coming to you as an in home dog trainer. His favorite part of being a trainer with Off Leash K9 is getting to help other dog parents build a better relationship with their dogs by bringing out their best selves, and learning a better way to communicate. He also loves getting to teach his kids first hand the amount of work that goes into even a fun job like this, and meeting so many different people who have a similar passion for animals. Jacob's family currently has five cats who are not enthused about Jacob's career choice, a bunny who loves to meet all the new dogs, and three wonderful dogs: a Beagle/Lab named Comet, an Australian Shepard/Border Collie called Tuna, and a Cane Corso named Penny.

I believe no matter the breed, no matter the problem, training can be accomplished without a heavy hand. This mean I will never resort to using pinch collars, prong collars, or shock collars (also called stim collars, or e-collars) to punish your dog. Not only are those methods harmful, they actually can prevent effective, long term learning! I align my practice with the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior's position statement on humane dog training: "There is no evidence that aversive training is necessary for dog training or behavior modification". In alignment with that, I blend positive reinforcement methods and force free handling to deter and replace unwanted behaviors, and encourage and strengthen desirable ones.

I am a certified dog trainer through ABC with multiple certifications through AKC. I offer both group classes and private lessons. I specialize in confidence building and family dog training but also compete and train in Rally, Agility, and Trick. I grew up with mixed breed rescues and now have had the pleasure of raising two chocolate labs from 8 weeks old to current. My passion for dogs started young and flourished when I spent time working at my local humane society before starting my certification path through ABC. I have been certified and a practicing dog trainer for about a decade. I am continuing my education and my growth as continued improvement is very important to me. I hope to help as many humans and dogs as I can throughout my career to find success and happiness.

My love for dogs led me to a career change. I left a career in Human Resources and administration to train dogs. I am an army veteran with a big hart and a lot of compassion. Volunteering and supporting animal shelters and rescues just wasn’t enough for me. My firm belief is that humans need dogs just as much as dogs need humans and I aim to make that connection. When dogs are brought to a rescue, it is only the beginning of a pursuit of the right family for them. I work with dogs to evaluate their temperament, get them socialized and get their true personalities to shine.

Crosby was my first dog, the first canine in my care. In 2007, I adopted her from the Dumb Friends League in Denver, Colorado and it set me on the path to where I am today. She was an owner relinquish; a natural born runner and jumper, she was an escape artist that they couldn’t deal with any longer. Over the next 11 years, Crosby taught me a lot about myself and canines, even more so in hindsight. Sadly, in June 2018, it was discovered cancer had taken over her organs. With one final gift, helping me confront and overcome my alcoholism, she crossed over the rainbow bridge. February 2019, by chance, I happened to be in a pet store and that’s how Willow entered my life. An eight week old pup, Willow decided she was going to be coming home with me and teach me some lessons about puppies that Crosby hadn’t been able to. In October 2020, Kia was added to our family via an adoption from Noah’s Ark in Rockford, Illinois. Who do you listen to? No treats, use treats, shock collars are mean, shock collars work great, pull and tug, never tug, use a clicker, clickers never work, be pure positive, use corrections. It is no wonder dog owners get confused and frustrated and eventually give up. This same thing happened to me until that little light went on in my head that no dog is the same as the next. That is why I have an open mind to everything and work with the dog to figure out what is the best way to teach him so that he understands. Rather than just training the dog, I go one step farther and really get to know the dog, what makes him tick, his likes and dislikes, his love of rules, ritual, treats, and reinforcement. Most importantly I let dogs be dogs and try to communicate with them in their language.

It was at a very young age that I decided that I wanted to work with animals. I grew up surrounded by a variety of animals from dogs and cats, to smaller critters and even horses. In 2003 at the age of 16 I started volunteering with the local Humane Society and in 2009 was offered an employment position working in the dog department. I started off as a kennel worker, monitoring the care and health of animals and maintaining proper playgroups for the dogs. During my time at the shelter I also received various certifications, cross trained in the cat and isolation department as well as the office and was trained as a vet assistant, aiding in the spaying, neutering, and other various medical tasks including surgery assistance, vaccinations and care for the animals that were housed there. In 2011 I began studying canine behavior, body language and training where I went on to provide canine behavior and temperament evaluations. I later took on the role of lead trainer and canine behavior consultant at the shelter. I began creating a training and modification program at the shelter. to help provide aid and training to dogs that would otherwise be lost at the shelter due to undesired or dangerous behavior. In 2015 shelter management and myself reached out to HAWS and created Mod Squad, a volunteer driven behavior modification program. As the program manager, I oversaw the in depth work, training, and rehabilitation of at risk dogs in the shelter, including modifying behavior, using TTouch work, Obedience, and enrichment. During the creation of the program I attended Animal Behavior Collage to receive my certification as a dog obedience instructor and began my work at Dawgs in Motion after completing my externship. I also received my Canine Good Citizen evaluation certification and am now an ABC mentor trainer at Dawgs in Motion where I also utilize my certification in Pet Massage Therapy.
