George & Friends Dog Training, LLC

Portland, OR

CPDT-KA | Fear Free Trainer Certification

Risa's journey begins in atlanta in radio as a producer at a local station and writer for CNN International. Seeing the devolution of news, Risa took her experience and leadership to a marketing role with the CNN Networks. During that time, there were periods where she thought, "I am going to leave and become a dog trainer." Instead, Risa moved to Turner's entertainment division, leading marketing and sales for TBS Atlanta, Turner South, Peachtree TV and Braves baseball. The irony, after moving to Portland, Oregon to be with family and to raise her two boys, the General Manager of a local Unleashed store asked her to become a dog trainer. With George O'Malley, her adopted dog, as an inspiration and her own family passionate about dogs, Risa trained and taught lessons during her spare time on weekends. Now, inspired by students and their families, she welcomes you all to join her in this positive and satisfying bonding experience with your family friend. Book a lesson or free phone call with her and George & Friends Dog Training, her company. Thank you all for making a quiet dream become a rewarding reality.

For Sara, it is inspiring to help continue and promote this growth mindset for fellow trainers, behavior consultants, and pet guardians. Even though Sara’s behavior consulting practice focuses on complex and sometimes dangerous behavior struggles, she is known for bringing fun, creative problem-solving, joy, and laughter to her classes and sessions. Sara is an optimist at heart, a perpetual Pollyanna, and loves teaching clients they have the power - they are their dog’s magic wand!

about what our team was doing

Hillsboro, OR

Dog Training

I am currently looking to work with a dog training facility or animal shelter that will help me learn new training techniques and perspectives. In college, I studied Anthropology. I was able to get an understanding of people, culture, and psychology. During, my time there I also worked as a Night Manager for a center that specialized in helping survivors of domestic violence. After that, I ended up as a quality assurance software engineer. With my time in technology, I worked directly with clients, setting up our onboarding program, and teaching it to new coworkers. I also taught classes to the rest of the company about what our team was doing. But I was looking for something that I truly enjoyed doing. That’s when I found dog walking and then training. Within the ABC program, I have worked with all kinds of dogs of a variety of ages and breeds. I had a wonderful externship that included a basic puppy class, and then an intermediate one.

My training methods are Natural, Non-Violent and Highly Effective. The process is simple… I have 13 years of professional experience and 20 of natural experience. I teach you dog language, discipline, care, games and then we retrain your dog. The rest is consistency and fine-tuning. Lots of fun with only a slight change in routine. I promise you will enjoy this style of training! I use body language and balanced leadership to guide these dogs to a respectful calming way of behaving themselves in your family. I cover everything with you from nutrition to exercise, games, rules, rewards, toys, grooming, health, socialization, training methods and behavioral correction. I even cover how to pet dogs and talk to them (great for kids to learn). Dogs all have issues, and we now have ways we can solve them; faster.

Dog Training

I started out as a TV and radio personality as a correspondent for the NBA’s show “Inside Stuff” as well as hosting my own ESPN show called “Unbelievable Sports, a career highlight! After 20 years, I felt like something was missing. So I made the difficult decision to start over and in 2003, I opened Half Moon Bay Dogs, a dog sitting business, on the coast of Northern California. Business was great, but after I graduated with honors from Animal Behavioral College, I was able to expand the business to include training. I was always a natural with dogs, but once I started formal training, I realized how much more I could do to be an effective trainer. My relationship with my own dogs benefited immensely and I was so pleased to be able to share my new found knowledge with my clients. I chose A.B.C. (Animal Behavior College) because I liked their training philosophy. The curriculum is based on positive motivational training methods and behavioral problem solving. The program begins by teaching students how to build a proper canine/human relationship. Creating a relationship built on positive interaction and consistency can often deter future unwanted behavior problems, facilitate faster learning and even solve some existing behavioral challenges. I am so lucky to say I am pursuing my true passion now. Life on television was fine, but my life with dogs is fantastic!

From pre-puppy home preparation to behavior modification, I can help with all of your needs. I enjoy teaching dog parents how to create the bond that allows loyalty to thrive. The trust created during the bonding process effects every aspect of your dog’s obedience. It doesn’t matter whether you take one of our free public outreach workshops, a structured group class or if you take private lessons. All that matters is that you create a bond that allows your dog to WANT to follow you. Everything after that is doggy play! Doggy Play is how we “train”.
