Peach on a Leash owner and head trainer, Alex Sessa, (formerly Andes) CPDT-KA, CDBC, VSPDT is a pet behavior expert who has been training dogs and studying dog behavior for nearly a decade. Alex is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, a certification that requires hundreds of logged training hours and passing a comprehensive exam. She is also one of only five trainers in the state of Georgia to receive full certification as a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. This high-level certification requires a rigorous application process that’s assessed by a panel of experts in dog training and behavior, and you must demonstrate the knowledge and ability to handle complex behavior cases in order to be certified. My core belief is that training should always be fun, for both the human and the dog! I began my journey as a professional dog trainer after I realized the dog that I had adopted had severe anxiety and aggression towards other dogs and humans. After working with a positive reinforcement trainer, I was inspired by the change I saw in my dog's life to become a professional trainer myself, with a particular interest in aggression and anxiety. I believe in using only science-supported positive reinforcement techniques, especially in cases with aggression, when aversive techniques may only suppress behavior rather than addressing the underlying cause. Since I began training professionally, I have worked with service dogs, aggression cases, and basic obedience, as well as trick training. My name is Shannon Altamirano and I am the owner of Sassy Dog. I am currently running a one woman show. I was never happy working for someone else and it has always been my dream to own my own business. It took me some time to figure out exactly what type of business it would be, I just knew it had to be with animals. It’s been a long road to get to this point. I drove a semi truck for about 8 years, moved from Milwaukee, WI to Georgia, and really discovered who I am up to this day. I moved to Georgia in 2013 and a few years later I met my now husband, David, at the trucking company that he still currently works at. I got lucky to find someone who supports this crazy idea of mine. We had our first baby boy, Xander, in January of 2021 and look forward to growing more. Don’t let that scare you away though! I am very driven and motivated and Xander has actually helped me in my dog training experience thus far. Dogs can benefit from learning in a distracted environment and with hearing, seeing, and smelling babies and children. With Xander, I worked up to the day I gave birth working as a dispatcher so if I was willing to do that for a company, imagine what I would do for my own clients! We have two American Bullies currently who are pretty spectacular. Dominic and Torredo are Xander’s protectors but can be just sweet as pie. Dominic was orginally trained with force training and it really opened my eyes and made me realize that I wanted to help dogs have a better training experience. Meet Sonja Thiels Ever since Sonja was a child, she was playing and working with somebodies’ dog or horse. Endless time spend at the barn, just observing horses, gave her great insight to how they co-exist, interact, and work within their family unit. Anybody that had a dog that was willing to lend her that dog would get an exercised, behaved, happily spent dog returned to them. Sonja is the founder of Paws At Play Dog Boarding and Training. Paws At Play is a singular concept in-home boarding and/or training experience in that it offers a set limit of no more than 20 dogs under 40’ish pounds. Her passion in dog (people) training stems from her desire to teach people how to communicate with their dogs in a positive and compassionate manner. Working with dogs and horses for near 45 years has given Sonja great understanding and knowledge on why dogs behave the way they do and how to make the relationship between dog and owner a happy and truly bonded one, leading to years of love and loyalty. Working with traumatized, those lacking social skills, abused, and those that have been abandoned has instilled in Sonja tremendous skill in rehabilitating dogs that were thought not to be able to co-exist in our society. Fostering countless dogs and finding them perfect homes to fit their personality gives her immense joy and gratification. When I got my first Rottweiler in 1992, I worked with an excellent trainer who opened the door for me to the world of dog behavior and training. Since then, I have worked specifically with companion animals and their owners to help prevent behavior problems, and build a strong bond between human and dog.
