Mary Torrano, M.A. Physiology & Behavior, Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), Family Dog Mediator (FDM) Fear Free Certified Professional (FFCP), Predation Substitute Training Certified Instructor (PST-CI), APDT member. I am qualified and certified by several professional training organizations and offer a variety of canine behavior consulting and training programs. I advocate for and use only fear-free, choice-based, trauma-informed, behavior modification and training methods. Teams advance clarity through clear communication and enjoyment in the learning process. Foundational experiences to promote feeling safe, calm & happy is crucial for conditioning positive emotional responses (CER). Teams develop confidence and resilience through a variety of positive experiences. Emphasis during sessions includes observing and understanding body language as a basis for communication. The LEGS model of animal welfare (Learning Environment Genetics Self) used in Family Dog mediation (FDM) is used to understand and support behavior change for the team. Only least Inhibitive functionally effective (LIFE) protocols are employed. I advocate against and do not allow the use of any training methods, techniques, tools, or equipment whose purpose and/or intent is to correct, punish, or suppress behavior using fear, intimidation, force, or pain for my teams. Environmental management, enrichment, and fostering behavioral diversity is the foundation of behavior change. Reinforcing desired behaviors, ignoring unwanted behaviors, managing behaviors you can’t ignore, and teaching behaviors you would like instead, is a clear and simple protocol for learning.
