Stephanie Barger is a dog trainer, specializing in separation anxiety and behavior modification. She spent the early years of her career teaching humans, transitioning to dog training over a decade ago. Her passion is helping you and your dog live more harmoniously together. The name of her business, Canine Zen, embodies her approach to life with our dogs. She recognizes that dogs are living, breathing, sentient, social beings that need human support, compassion, and understanding to live beside us in our strange human world. She shows people how to effectively communicate with their dogs and understand what their dogs are trying to communicate to them. She strives to provide a safe environment for both dogs and humans where they can learn and thrive together without fear, pain, or judgement. If your life with your dog is not what you anticipated and “nothing has worked” to change things, Stephanie helps you understand and work with your dog to achieve your goals and a better life together. She is an amazing teacher, works compassionately with both humans and dogs and provides practical solutions for your dog training needs. Her goal is to calm the chaos in your home. I am qualified and certified by several professional training organizations and offer a variety of canine behavior consulting and training programs. Teams advance clarity through clear communication and enjoyment in the learning process. Foundational experiences to promote feeling safe, calm & happy is crucial for conditioning positive emotional responses (CER). Teams develop confidence and resilience through a variety of positive experiences. Emphasis during sessions includes observing and understanding body language as a basis for communication. The LEGS model of animal welfare (Learning Environment Genetics Self) used in Family Dog mediation (FDM) is used to understand and support behavior change for the team. Only least Inhibitive functionally effective (LIFE) protocols are employed. I advocate against and do not allow the use of any training methods, techniques, tools, or equipment whose purpose and/or intent is to correct, punish, or suppress behavior using fear, intimidation, force, or pain for my teams. Environmental management, enrichment, and fostering behavioral diversity is the foundation of behavior change. Reinforcing desired behaviors, ignoring unwanted behaviors, managing behaviors you can’t ignore, and teaching behaviors you would like instead, is a clear and simple protocol for learning. Hello! My name is Maddie, and I am the Owner and Head Trainer here at Woofology LLC. I have extensive experience working with animals since I was a young child. I was always “that kid” that took in strays and animals in need and did the best I could to give them love and care. At the age of 10 years, I entered into the horsemanship arena and competed regionally in equestrian horse shows, and even won a few Championships! I always took horses that had little training–virtual diamonds-in-the-rough and turned them into champions. We didn’t have a lot of money to buy championship ponies, so with a lot of love, effort, and training I made them. I always found myself on the animals that were a little misunderstood—and therefore a little mismanaged, stubborn and somewhere outright dangerous. I stuck with them and we eventually succeeded in giving these animals a chance at doing something important. All my life, I seem to end up meeting those “troubled souls” in need of love, care, and training. When I was in College, I met and married my husband. He is in the Air Force and his work took us halfway across the globe to Okinawa, Japan. There I finished my degree (I wanted to be a high school teacher–I love to teach and make a difference) but I found that my passion and skills were needed to help with the extensive stray problem on the island. I volunteered with the local Animal Rescue group where we managed to save many lives, rehome them and get them stateside. I personally fostered the big dogs—and the ones that had “issues”. It was also in Okinawa where we started our family. After our four-year tour was over, we returned to New Mexico. We faced some personal hardship upon our arrival, a hardship that made me realize life is precious, short and always uncertain. It was at this time that I decided I needed to do what I always wanted to—work with animals as a career. I already had so much experience working with dogs and that “natural” understanding of animal behavior it wa
